The House in Bell's Wynd, part 2 (of 2)
As soon as the stranger left their apartment Christine put on her cloak and went out, even though it was late at night. Walking up the wynd, she muttered as she went, "the very man, the very man."
Christine made directly for Blackfriars Wynd, where she stopped, and looked up to a small window. There was light in it, and going up a narrow stair she reached a door, which she quietly opened. An old woman was there, busily spinning.
"Anne Hall," cried Christine, as she entered, "he has come, he has come! I knew his face the moment I saw it."
"Patience, patience, Christine," replied the woman, “quiet now, the walls are thin and people are always listening. Now, I'll spin, and you speak." And so, she began to spin the wheel and the noise of the spinning covered their words.
“What does it matter that you have seen him?” continued Anne. “You swore not to talk, although I learnt the story when you were sick and delirious during your stay with me, just after you left Bell’s Wynd. You cannot break your oath now, after twenty years, as though it was a stick to be broken and cast away when you feel like it. And remember, if you break your word, you condemn him to death”.
